France wants direct UN intervention in Goma

Issued on:

France says it would like UN peacekeepers to intervene directly in the Democratic Republic of Congo. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius is calling for a review of Monusco's tasks. In Goma, the mission operates under a limited mandate that does not allow it to engage rebel forces. Fabius said it was "absurd" to have a few hundred rebels take over a city where 1,500 UN troops are stationed. Helmut Heitman, a Great Lakes analyst, says the situation remains volatile.
