A total of 153 workers had been trapped in the state-owned Wangjialing mine since it flooded during construction work on 28 March. The accident occurred when workers dug into an abandoned mine that had been shut down and filled with water.

On Sunday night, 100 rescue workers discovered the first nine survivors two hours after re-entering the mine. Up to 300 rescuers were searching for more survivors on Monday morning.

The accident was blamed on lax safety standards and was one of several in China last week. According to official statistics, 2,631 coal miners were killed last year in the country - or about seven a day.
