At least 14 people have died and 135 have been injured after a 5.4-magnitude earthquake struck a remote area of south-west China on Thursday.

The quake hit Yunnan province, which lies near the border with Myanmar, and destroyed several houses, according to local authorities.

Witnesses told the Xinhua news agency that parts of a supermarket and hotel had caved in, and that people were buried under the debris.

Power outages were recorded in much of Yingjiang county.

The earthquake is the second in China’s south-western province in recent years, with the region still working to overcome the damages inflicted by a May 2008 quake that registered at 8.0 and killed or left missing nearly 87,000 people.
