Afghanistan celebrates 94th anniversary of independence from Britain

Issued on:

It's not every day that Afghanistan has something to celebrate. The war-torn country celebrated it's 94th anniversary of independence from Britain yesterday. The day was marked with a small parade attended by Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other top officials. Afghanistan was under British control for less than a century. After three wars, it finally declared independence in 1919 after signing a treaty with Britain. To better understand the legacy of Britain in Afghanistan, RFI spoke to Shah Mahmoud Hanifi, a professor of Afghan history at the James Madison University in Virgina.
