Hello everyone!

Welcome to the “new/old” Sound Kitchen. We’ve put the programme back together: instead of two smaller programmes on two days, The Sound Kitchen is now one programme on one day – Saturday, at 4:52, 6:22, and 7:52 universal time.

You’ll hear the winner’s names announced and the week’s quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you have grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so tune in every Saturday!

I have more wonderful news! The Sound Kitchen Listeners Cookbook will finally become a reality. A month later than first announced, but the web team promises it will be ready, in the online version, this month, June. Next step: the printed version … and I won’t give up! In the meantime, if you sent in a recipe, try to send in a photo of your completed dish, and of course, of yourself!

This week’s question was read on 20 May, and was about European politics. That week voters in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia state voted against Chancellor Angela Merkel’s party in state legislature elections. The North Rhine-Westphalia state is Germany’s most populous state and one which has a history of influencing national elections, so it was seen as a telling vote for the fate of the party at the national level. I asked you to send in the name of Angela Merkel’s party, which was voted out in the 13 May elections …

The answer is: the Christian Democratic Union of Germany, or the CDU.

The winners this week are: Mokti, from Sirajganj, Bangladesh; Mr Azam Ali Soomro, from Sindh, Pakistan; Mr Swopan Chakrobrty from Kolkata, India; Mr Uko Kalu from Serrekunda, The Gambia, and Mr Muhammad Nasyr, from Katsina State, Nigeria.

Congratulations, winners!

This week’s question is about French politics. Faithful RFI listeners that you are, you know that we voted last week for our MPs, our National Assembly representatives. The left holds the Senate; who now holds the House? Which political party won the majority in last Sunday’s legislative elections?

Send me your answer by 23 July; the answer and the winners will be announced on the 25 August programme. Be sure you send your postal address in with your answer … and be sure and tell me if you are a Mr. or a Mrs. or a Ms. or a Miss – I don’t want to get it wrong!

Send your answers to:

Remember, it’s not just the quiz that wins you a prize. If your essay goes on the air, you’ll find a package in the mail from the Sound Kitchen. Write in about your community heroes – the people in your community who are quietly working to make the world a better place, in whatever way they can. I am still looking for your “This I Believe” essays, too. Tell us about the principles that guide your life … what you have found to be true from your very own personal experience. Or write in with your most memorable moment, and/or your proudest achievement.

Send your mini book reviews, your musical requests, your secret “guilty” pleasure (mine’s chocolate!), your tricks for remembering things, your favourite quotations and proverbs, descriptions of the local festivals you participate in, your weirdest dream, or just your general all-around thoughts to:

thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr

Include a phone number, if you can. I’d like to call you and put you on-the-air … and send you a thank-you gift for participating.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

All the best,

Susan
