If Scotland votes for independence next year, it will try to get rid of the country's nuclear weapons. This has raised the ire of the British government, which says it will make Scotland's nuclear bases into sovereign United Kingdom territories. Many see this as scaremongering by the British government to encourage Scots to vote no in the referendum. Decommissioning Scotland's nuclear weapons would entail huge costs and raises questions whether the British government would want to remain a nuclear power. William Walker, professor of international relations at St Andrews University, explained to RFI the likely future of Scotland's nuclear weapons should the country vote for independence.
