A year away from a referendum on Scottish independence, opinion polls show only a third of voters are in favour of splitting from the United Kingdom. The "no" camp says independence would be fraught with risks. There is the question of oil in the North Sea and the Scottish and UK authorities would have to decide how to divide up oil revenues. Other potential problems are the fact that Scotland would need to apply to rejoin the European Union and Nato. But the "yes" camp says an independent Scotland would create a more equal and more pro-European state. Nicola McEwen, director of public policy at the University of Edinburgh's Academy of Government, discusses what's at stake.
