Almost 500 years ago, the philosopher Thomas More, writing his Utopia, put forward the idea of a 36-hour working week. The French Socialist Party went even further, suggesting 35 hours. This was voted into law in 2000, and the idea was to create some 700,000 extra jobs. This didn't happen. For some time the ruling UMP party has called for a complete abolition of the 35-hour week. But now, the attacks are coming from the Socialists themselves.
