Dozens killed in Iranian plane crash

Rescuers in Iran are still searching for at least one person missing after a passenger plane crashed, killing 77 people and injuring 26.The Iran Air jet crashed Sunday evening in bad weather near the city of Orumiyeah, in northwestern Iran.

"This flight had 105 persons on board, 94 passengers and 11 flight crew. Based on the latest figures due to last night's aviation accident 77 people were killed, 26 wounded,” the head of crisis committee of Iran's road and transportation ministry Ahmad Majidi told Iran’s ISNA news agency.

He said two people were missing, not one as reported by state media.

"We do not know if the two missing are among the fuselage's debris, or in hospital, or dead," he said.

Television footage of the crash showed the airliner broken into three pieces and buried in thick snow.

"We are examining the reason for the crash, but bad weather appears to be the main cause,” Shahrokh Noushabadi, a spokesperson for Iran Air, said on said.

A transport ministry official told state television that one of the plane’s two black boxes had been recovered, which would help determine the cause of the crash.
