Roland Garros stays in Paris

Issued on:

Like so many city dwellers, the French Open tennis championship has outgrown its city home. But instead of moving to the suburbs, it will stay in Paris. The city proposed an expansion plan that impressed the French Tennis Federation. It voted on Sunday against moving the tournament out to one of the suburbs.

The new Roland Garros will add a new court, and expand the complex into a neighbouring park.

It will also add a cover to the main court, so it can be used in the rain and for night games.

The president of the federation said the Paris plan bucks the trend of building ever-bigger stadiums, and keeps the uniqueness of Roland Garros' 85-year history.
