Sharapova dispatches Caradantu quickly, Williams and Razzano drag on

Five things we learned from day three at Roland Garros.

  • There's no point overstaying your welcome. Russian second seed Maria Sharapova was on court for 48 minutes as she disposed of Alexandea Cadantu to advance to round two.
  • Slow is not beautiful. By contrast Serena Williams and Virginie Razzano were sluggish. It took them 15 error-strewn minutes for the first three games of their first-round clash on centre court. It was all over in three hours.

  • That what I said on day one about it not being over until it's over really is the case. American fifth seed Serena Williams was two points from victory against Virginie Razzano and she let it slip away.
  • Mexican waves while players are waiting to play are impolite and self-indulgent. Umpires should tell the crowds to stop being rude.
  • Umpires need to get a badge annually from tennis authorities to officiate and there are four levels. White, bronze, silver and gold. Only 25 possess the gold badge and 16 of them are at Roland Garros.
