The 30-year-old Portugal forward is on 324 Madrid goals in 310 games, having overtaken Raul's record.

The club had already considered Ronaldo the record holder as they credit him with a deflected goal in 2010.

Ronaldo's official record-breaking strike came after an hour from just outside the box - either side of Marcelo and Jese contributions.

After scoring twice in a 2-0 win over Malmo last month, a presentation was held before kick-off against Levante at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Ronaldo put the following message out on social media: 'thanks team mates and Real Madrid fans for this beautiful moment.'

New York Cosmos striker Raul, who retires next month, took 741 games to score his 323 goals.

The Spaniard told the newspaper Marca that he could not possibly describe the success Ronaldo has enjoyed.

"What Ronaldo does you cannot name. It is on another historic level.

"It is incredible what he has done in only six years, scoring an average of more than 50 goals a season, when it used to be hard for me to reach 20.

"I hope he keeps scoring many more goals for a long time and helps the team to win titles."
