Arsenal get back on Premier League track with win at Everton

Teenager Alex Iwobi scored his first Arsenal goal as Arsene Wenger's side won 2-0 at Everton on Saturday to keep alive their faint hopes of winning the Premier League title. The 19-year-old academy graduate added to Danny Welbeck’s opener just before half-time.

Making his first start in the Premier League, the Nigeria international showed a neat turn of speed to sprint onto Hector Bellerin's ball over the top before coolly sliding the ball under Everton goalkeeper Joel Robles.

It justified Wenger’s faith in the youngster ahead of England international Theo Walcott and the France striker Olivier Giroud.

Wenger has said there will be a few twists before the end of the Premier League season in May. Whether that includes a late surge by Arsenal remains to be seen.

Saturday’s success at Goodison Park was their second victory in nine games and their first in four league matches.

However, the success came amid protests from the travelling fans. Some unfurled a banner calling for the replacement of 66-year-old Wenger.

He has been in charge since 1996 and has overseen 1,100 games. The past week has been difficult for the Frenchman.

Last Sunday Watford beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Emirates in the quarter-final of the FA Cup. Arsenal were attempting to become only the third side in the 145 year history of the competition to win it three times on the trot.

That disappointment was compounded with elimination from the Uefa Champions League. Arsenal lost 3-1 in Barcelona to leave the tournament at the last 16 for the sixth consecutive year.

At least the win at a drab Everton side reinforced their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. With eight games remaining, Arsenal are in third place.
