Liverpool overcome Dortmund challenge with stunning comeback

Liverpool won a Europa League quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund, thanks to an amazing fightback. An emotional roller coaster for the fans, some drama, a lot of excitement. Simply brilliant football.

Last October, Liverpool manager jurgen Klopp said that he wanted to turn the club's supporters from "doubters into believers." Well, he's clearly well on his way.

The Reds hit back from 2-0 and 3-1 down to beat Borussia Dortmund 4-3. Four second-half goals against Borussia Dortmund saw the Reds advance 5-4 on aggregate, a scenario that did not appear to be on the cards when the visitors went two goals up inside nine minutes, or when they scored a third in the second half to take a 3-1 lead.

"It was brilliant, outstanding, emotional, everything. I will not forget it because it was special. I know this is a place for big football moments. We didn't start these stories but it is now our responsibility to try and write some more nice stories," Jurgen Klopp after the match at Anfield.

"It is difficult to explain. A wonderful, wonderful night at Anfield and to be honest the game was strange," Klopp said. "This is European football at its best. It's hard to believe. Congratulations to all of the lads.

"It is a game that all fans -- even not of Liverpool or Dortmund -- can say, 'OK, football is a nice game.'"

Meanwhile, his successor at Dortmund, manager Thomas Tuchel, summed up his's dramatic defeat to Liverpool succinctly - "S*** happens."

He could only look on in disbelief at the final whistle as the 5-4 aggregate scoreline condemned his side to defeat, four days on from a 2-2 draw with Schalke that left his men seven points adrift of leaders Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

"I can't explain," said Tuchel. "I could explain something logical. That wasn't logical. With the equaliser, it was an atmosphere where everybody, except our supporters, believed it was meant to be."

Liverpool earned a Europa League semi-final against Villarreal from their heroic comeback against his former side Borussia Dortmund.

Defending champions Sevilla face Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk in the second semi-final drawn Friday.
