It finished 6-2 7-5 in Toronto in only 82-minutes, with the 29-year-old dominant on hard court.

Djokovic suffered a surprise third round Wimbledon loss this summer to American Sam Querrey.

The Serbian previously won Canada's top tennis event, which rotates between Toronto and Montreal, in 2007, 2011 and 2012. Ivan Lendl holds the tournament record with six titles.

Moments after seeing off Nishikori, Djokovic saluted fans at the Aviva Centre and entered the stands to hug his coaches and his doubles partner, Nenad Zimonjic.

During the trophy ceremony he asked supporters to hug the person next to them. Not everyone took part in the bonding exercise but Djokovic turned to his left and wrapped the on-court announcer in a bear hug.

"I was in a hug myself, so I could not really look at the whole stadium," said Djokovic, who is now 35-6 all-time at the Rogers Cup.

"I did feel that it was just the right moment for me to ask as we are all here for the same thing - we are all here to connect through tennis, through passion for the sport, and it is nice that we got to sense and feel that kind of energy around the stadium."
