The day started with New Zealand’s opening batsmen Martin Guptill and Tom Latham laying a solid foundation to the innings with a 118-run partnership.

However, Ashwin broke the stand by dismissing Latham for 53.

Latham’s wicket triggered a mini-collapse as the Kiwis lost five wickets for 148 runs, including that of Guptill who was run out by Ashwin for a fighting 72.

Middle order batsman James Neesham scored 71 and stitched important partnerships with the lower order batsmen to help his side get close to the 300 mark. Left arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets.

India were 18 without loss at stumps leading by 276 runs in their second innings. They will be banking on some quick runs from the blade of their captain Virat Kohli, whose double hundred in the first innings powered the hosts to 557 runs.

Kohli is aiming for a series whitewash following India’s convincing wins in Kolkata and Kanpur.
