Angolan Pentecostal church sanctioned after New Year stampede tragedy

Issued on:

Angola's government has suspended a Pentecostal church from conducting any activities for 60 days. This comes after a New Year's Eve stampede during an overcrowded service, when 16 people, including three children, were killed, and dozens were injured. The incident took place in a stadium in the capital Luanda, where the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God had organized a vigil. RFI spoke to Sizaltina Cutaia, a human rights activist from Angola. She says the suspension was welcomed in Luanda and describes the growing influence of this church in a mainly Catholic country.
